There is nothing quite like coming home after a long stressful day of school or work and killing some monsters, zombies or whatever in front of the television on your gaming council. Although you may agree, there is constant controversy with the directions video games have gone, ultimately revealing today’s society to be that of a violent one. Which is true and false at the same time, as in the past violence video games and movies was not all that popular, but the line of violence and graphic content has gradually been pushed to what it is today. The main question being asked is does video games have an overall positive or negative effect on overall violence in our society? Well this debate could go on forever as many would argue that our youth continues to learn from our media, and imitate what they see in movies and video games, and on the other side we can understand that video games serve its initial desired purpose, which is primarily to entertain. From a statistical point of view, the total number of crime rates in today’s Canadian society can’t simply be tied to crime rates in general. Increased crime rates can’t be correlated with increased violence in video games, as there are far too many other possible factors. Although violent video games are not evidently responsible for increased violence in society, they have definitely set today’s standards, and made things that were not acceptable in the past, a hit. In some cases I don’t know how much worse the violence and graphic content can be enhanced, as certain games have shown, but it is certain that the line of acceptance will continue to be pushed.

Don’t you just love getting stuck behind a strongly opinionated blabber mouth for an entire 45 minute bus ride? Well I’m sure the answer is no, and I bet some of you brave ones budded into the easdroped conversation to provide your own opinion, tell them go talk to a tree, spit in their face, or at least told them to get over it.  Well it just seems people are not always able to accept things for what they’ve become now en days, and everybody’s got something to say. In a sense we’ve created a bloging culture based on certain aspects of society’s culture that is controversial. Today there is a countless number of people shooting their mouths off on tv, radio and online/internet, and spending countless hours expressing their opinions on just about everything and anything. But what I am wondering is why? What motivates people to do this? To do what im doing right now? Well I suppose there is no straight answer to that question, but it can be assumed they there is often a strong emotional attachment to a specific subject in the media, to someone hating the world. Or they could simply have been forced to blog like me. And then you get those people who strive for fame and fortune by getting ridiculous amounts of people to watch, listen or read their blog whether they like them or not. A perfect example of this is this Phil Defranco character, as someone who enjoys spending his time letting the internet world know his feelings towards events that have already been covered by the media to give us the obvious impression. But anyway I guess people just can’t keep silent when everybody is listening right. “If you build it [people] will come”.. or something like that, you speak, they listen. So there is nothing left to say, except keep bloging your hearts out!

Some people will do anything to get on television, but how far are people willing to go to be an entertaining hit on the non official television,-aka Youtube /internet. In the past it seems as though certain hooligan groups would go about causing ruckus for the sake of self entertainment and group approval, but today with the popular increase in youtube, youthful individuals are more likely to participate in ridiculous activities such as sabotaging someone’s house, random fights with strangers, paintball drivebys..etc. This new sense of shared entertainment is escalating to a whole new level, influenced by a motive of entertainment over sympathy. Although this hobby or activity is seen in professional film especially the famous ‘Jackass’, pushing people to do stupid things, regardless of the mandatory disclaimer, but it is obvious that without Youtube and internet, these immature amateur videos would not be as successfully popular as they are, and others would  not be as willing to copy.  In the end boys will be boys,  people are going to do what they want regardless, but not all things you see on the internet are funny, and eventually events will end up  leading to more severe events that will have not so fun consequences.

When I fist watched this video I thought it was suppose to be a joke.. but apparently it’s for real. It appears as an amateur video, but is professionally produced. It is rather sad how this video is not just a stereotype of ridiculous Hollywood party nonsense, but in fact a reflection of everyday life society that media has created for many. This way of living that the media illustrates for us is strongly influenced by popular music, as we witnessed a variety of very different behavior as certain types of music were favorable amongst society. In the past Rock was the predominant preference, and eventually lead towards a shift hip hop and a drastic expansion of party culture.

It may appear as though there is no constant in the media world, as industries such as music, video, clothing, and technology, are constantly changing to enhance consumption rates worldwide. This rate of excessive consumption is the way in which society is now structured, and serious consequences follow when individuals, especially society’s youth, don’t buy into the new trends. Although it appears lifestyles and trends from the past had an insignificant effect on society, as media has evolved into what it is today, they decide ‘what is hot and what is not’, and individuals acquire a sense of belonging, as well as a sense of identity based on the trends they follow.  In frequent cases, individuals in high school are criticized if they do not follow the luxurious clothing trends in order to be considered higher class, and are often considered to be an outcast, which almost always leads to depression.

And I thought it was the individual who ‘wore the pants’.. .Turns out it’s the pants that ‘wear the pants’ over the individual.

The ‘A channel news’ layoffs that occurred not too long ago is a perfect example of how consumption deeply impacts our society.  As technology continues to develop, individuals are able to access reliable news sources and acquire free information on community events as well as world events without even having to turn on the television; instead they can get it from the internet or even by just looking down to their blackberry or Iphone, wherever they might be. Although there is not necessarily a lack of demand, the economy is negatively impacted in these specified sectors that are dependent on consumers. In relation to demand, another factor affecting television and broadcasting sectors is the desired purpose for the use of television, as it continues to turn farther towards entertainment opposed to informative purposes. Again even this entertainment industry is also affected in the same way as broadcasting, as technology continues to allow individuals to access music, movies and other sources of entertainment without turning on the television, or buying a cd. Overall the final thought is on how technology has enhanced our economy as well as brought it to its knees, as sectors in media beg for consumers.
